Cobra Commander & Storm Shadow G.I. Joe Screen Prints by Rhys Cooper

Acidfree Gallery x Hasbro G.I. Joe Screen Print Series - Cobra Standard Edition Triptic by Rhys Cooper: The Baroness, Cobra Commander & Storm Shadow

Later today Acidfree Gallery will be releasing the final two pieces in Rhys Cooper’s epic Cobra triptic. Designed as part of Acidfree Gallery’s Hasbro Screen Print Series, “Cobra Commander” and “Storm Shadow” combine with Rhys’ previously released “Baroness” screen print to form a gigantic G.I. Joe image featuring three of the most ruthless villains in the G.I. Joe universe. I especially love the black and red Cobra emblem in the background. This series will look sick next to Grzegorz Domaradzki's G.I. Joe triptic. The Blot can’t wait to see what’s coming up next in this exciting screen print series.

Guzu Gallery presents Deep Cuts: 12" Tributes to Our Favorite Music Heroes

Guzu Gallery presents Deep Cuts: 12

For Guzu Gallery’s newest group art show “Deep Cuts: 12" Tributes to Our Favorite Music Heroes” they’ve asked over 20 artists to choose a beloved music icon, cult hero or legend and let his/her creativity spill to paper. There were, however, three conditions: (1) the artwork must be a screen print; (2) the artwork must be album cover size; and (3) the artwork must cost $25. Oh yeah, and (4) the artwork must kick ass!

The show is scheduled to coincide with spring break, which is always the best time of year in Austin. It’s when SXSW, one of the largest and most hotly anticipated music festivals on the planet, crashes head first into the Live Music Capital of the World. And what better time to celebrate our favorite music heroes than South by Southwest!?!

The opening reception will be Thursday, March 7th from 7 to 10pm and the artwork will remain up through April 7th. In classic Guzu style, there will be live music on opening night to shake the walls and rattle the art. But don’t fret if you can’t make the show’s opening, each limited edition screen print will be available in the Guzu Gallery online store on Sunday, March 10th at 3pm CST.

Deep Cuts: 12" Tributes to Our Favorite Music Heroes features works by the following artists: Jason Chalker, Miguel Coronado III, Tim Doyle, Graham Erwin, M. Fersner, Matt Frank, Mauro Garza, Paul Hanley, Kachi, Scott Kinnebrew, Mark Lone, Yehudi Mercado, Danny Miller, David Moscati, New Flesh, Billy Perkins, Jesse Philips, Gary Pullin, Cody Schibi, Zach Taylor, Eric Torres, Vincent X. Torres, Nathan Walker and Robert Wilson IV.

Sadly all five of these sick customs sold out almost immediately from D-Lux’ online store.

Black & Gold Target Vinyl Figure by Luke Chueh

Black & Gold Target (Alternate Colorway) Vinyl Figure by Luke Chueh

The third and final colorway of Luke Chueh’s popular Target vinyl figure drops next month and The Blot can’t wait! Target (Alternate Colorway) features the black, gold and red alternative color scheme that has become synonymous with Luke’s vinyl figures. The Blot’s been wanting to add a Target to my collection, and this black and gold figure is just too sweet to pass up!

Produced by Munky King and based on the classic painting by Luke Chueh, Target features a highly detailed bullet-ridden resin backdrop that contrasts with the minimalist aesthetic of Luke's iconic 6.5” bear. For a more seamless look, the walls are designed to interlock with the walls of the other two Target colorways to create one long continuous shooting range.

Target (Alternate Colorway) has a limited edition run size of just 500 pieces, and features a brilliant 10.5” red wall with a matte black bear, gold target and paint bucket. The Black and Gold Target drops March 16th at Munky King studio and online for $120. Even better still, Luke Chueh will be on hand at Munky King’s new location to sign this awesome figure from 1-4pm.

New Mk2 Maintenance Sprogs by Cris Rose

Mk2 Maintenance Sprogs by Cris Rose - Copper Renold, Renold & Runcible Resin Figures

Three years ago Cris Rose’s first Sprogs were released upon the world. Renold, Rigel and Radcliffe were three little maintenance bots with cheeky personalities and a dumpy persuasion. Sadly, at the end of last year they were discontinued…but here are their replacements! Still retaining much of the charm and character of their Mk1 guises, these Mk2 Maintenance Sprogs sees a major upgrade in robustness and power. The MK2 version of Renold, Rigel and Radcliffe can lift heavier, twist harder and grab more accurately with their upgraded limbs and are 60% bigger overall. These resin figures also sport new articulation at the neck and crown on the front.

The first release of Rose’s new Mk2 Maintenance Sprogs go on sale today, Wednesday, February 27th, at 18:00 London time via the Cris Rose online store. This release comes in Rose’s classic copper colorway, the very same color scheme Cris’ very first 2 bots Runcible and Rotund were released in. Each figure has a limited edition run size of just 5 pieces and retails for $65.

Iron Man 3 Character Movie Posters Part 2 - The Mandarin & Pepper Potts

Iron Man 3 One Sheet Character Movie Posters - Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin

Ok, now Marvel’s new series of Iron Man 3 character movie posters is really getting good. The one sheet movie poster above features Ben Kingsley as the film’s primary villain The Mandarin! I believe this is our first full body shot of The Mandarin in costume, and while not 100% true to the character’s look in the comic books he does look pretty cool. Let’s be honest, The Mandarin was always going to be a hard character to include in a live action movie. Plain and simple, he is a terrible embodiment of a number of Asian stereotypes. And while Kingsley is an incredibly gifted and well respected actor, no one in their right might saw him being cast in this roll. Is it me or is The Mandarin in this poster giving off a very Bane in The Dark Knight Rises vibe?

Iron Man 3 One Sheet Character Movie Posters - Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts

The second new Iron Man 3 character movie poster features Gwyneth Paltrow as Iron Man’s main squeeze Pepper Potts. I really hope Gwyneth continues to play a significant role in the Iron Man franchise because she’s done a great job with the character, especially considering how little screen time they give her. Of course, if this poster is to be believed Pepper’s going to primarily worrying and mourning poor old Tony Stark in this film.

Iron Man 3 swoops into theaters on May 3, 2013. Click here to see Marvel's first set of Iron Man 3 character movie posters.

Once Screen Print “The Horse” by Alice Lin

Once Screen Print “The Horse” by Alice Lin

The Blot first met Alice Lin (aka ComixGuru on Twitter and Instagram) back in 2009 through our mutual love of LOST and screen prints. Fast forward to 2013 (has it really been almost four years?), and Alice is now an accomplished screen print artist in her own right! Alice was one of the many talented artists showcased in the Hero Complex Gallery’s latest group art show “Oscar Legends,” which featured art inspired by some of history’s most groundbreaking Oscar-winning films.

Alice's print “The Horse” is inspired by the film Once and its Oscar winning song “Falling Slowly” by The Swell Season (Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova). The title of the print actually refers to Glen’s Takamine NP15 acoustic guitar, which he calls The Horse, and is made up of the lyrics to 8 of the songs from the Once soundtrack. Pretty cool don’t you think!?!

“The Horse” by Alice Lin is a 24”x18” signed and numbered screen print inspired by the hit film Once. Limited to just 50 pieces, “The Horse” can be purchased from the Hero Complex Gallery’s online store for just $35!

Book Review: Nick Cardy: The Artist At War

Book Review - Nick Cardy: The Artist At War by Nick Cardy and Renee Witterstaetter Cover

As a kid there was no bigger comic book than Marv Wolfman and George Pérez’ New Teen Titans. The Blot ate that series up and always wanted more from DC Comics. That led me to original Teen Titans series from the ‘60s and ‘70s, and the art of Nick Cardy. Cardy is a renowned commercial illustrator and comic book artist who worked on books such as Aquaman, Tomahawk, Bat Lash and the aforementioned Teen Titans for DC. Now in his 90s, Cardy has literally been drawing all of his life.

Book Review - Nick Cardy: The Artist At War by Nick Cardy and Renee Witterstaetter Artwork

Nick Cardy: The Artist At War by Nick Cardy and Renee Witterstaetter transports us back to a period of time before Nick was a well known and successful illustrator. It shows us a different side of his artwork, from a time when Nick was one of the young Americans shipped overseas to fight in World War II. Throughout his time servicing the US during WWII, Nick carried a sketchbook to document his time in the conflict from beginning to end. Cardy was deployed with the 3rd Armored Spearhead Division, and fought through Europe (for which he received two Purple Hearts), ending up in Paris after VE Day. His sketches - in pencil, pen and watercolor - are extraordinarily vivid, and capture not only the humor and camaraderie, but also the horror of war.

Book Review - Nick Cardy: The Artist At War by Nick Cardy and Renee Witterstaetter Artwork

What The Blot loves about this book is how it’s able to tell the vivid origin story of one of our cherished comic book creators in such a unique way. Rarely do we see this side of our comic book creators, and it shines a light on what I am sure played a huge influence on the artists and writers from golden age of comics: World War II. Besides some amazing artwork, Nick Cardy: The Artist At War also includes a really interesting interview Nick gave to Comic Book Resources and captions written by Nick explaining each piece. It’s truly fascinating to be able to travel back to the 1940s through one man’s artwork during a very frightful time in the world’s history. If you’re a fan of comic books, history or the WWII era, you should definitely check this book out.

Book Review - Nick Cardy: The Artist At War by Nick Cardy and Renee Witterstaetter Artwork

Nick Cardy: The Artist At War presents the entire contents of Cardy's wartime sketchbook, alongside his own commentary. It's a chronicle of one man's journey, but one that speaks for millions. Nick Cardy: The Artist At War goes on sale in stores everywhere tomorrow, Tuesday, February 26th, but you can pre-order a copy now through Amazon for just $15.96 here.

Iron Man 3 Character Movie Posters Part I - War Machine & Aldrich Killian

Iron Man 3 One Sheet Character Movie Posters - Don Cheadle as James Rhodes (Iron Patriot/War Machine)

The promotion of Iron Man 3 is just getting started, but what The Blot’s seen so far looks pretty amazing! In my opinion, it’s going to be really hard for any movie to beat out IM3 in the box office come summer 2013 (sorry Supes). Marvel released its first two Iron Man 3 one sheet character movie posters recently, and sadly they’re pretty ho-hum. Just your standard photos of characters looking…well, looking off into the sunset. First up is Don Cheadle as James Rhodes in his new Iron Patriot/War Machine armor. Here’s hoping there’s actually a distinction between Iron Patriot and War Machine, but at this point I’m thinking they’re going to be one and the same.

Iron Man 3 One Sheet Character Movie Posters - Guy Pearce as Aldrich Killian

The second new Iron Man 3 character movie poster features Guy Pearce as the one of the film’s primary villains Aldrich Killian. In Warren Ellis' 2005 Iron Man story "Extremis" Killian was a scientist who developed the dangerous Extremis virus. Possible plot point!?! We shall see!

Iron Man 3 swoops into theaters on May 3, 2013.

“So, it’s been 3 days since I said yes.” - Robin

True!

“And your panic attacks are getting shorter and further apart.” - Robin

I CAN’T DO THIS! I FEEL LIKE I’M DROWING!
Also true.

“So I guess we’re officially engaged!
Maybe we should tell our parents.
I assume my dad already knows.
You, you did call him and got his permission right?” – Robin

Hahaha! Yeah, yeah!
Robin, I bought you with an ox and some spices from the east.

He’s going to put you in a cage and
send you on horseback to my remote desert camp.

“Ok, Barney.” - Robin

Hold on I’m not done.

Where you’ll be bathed in perfumes and oils,
and delivered to my tent.
After you perform the traditional dance of the seven veils,
we’ll adjourn to the tiger skin rug where we’ll…

“Barney...” - Robin

Robin!
If we’re going to build a marriage together
we’ve got to stop interrupting each other all the time.

“Fine, finish your story.” - Robin

Thank you.
Where we’ll…do it.

“Did you ask for my father’s permission?” - Robin

No I did not.

Dwyane Wade x Li-Ning “Way of Wade” NBA All-Star Weekend 2013 Screen Prints by Jermaine Rogers

Dwyane Wade x Li-Ning “Way of Wade” NBA All-Star Weekend Pop-Up Shop

This past weekend was the 2013 NBA All-Star Game here in Houston. While The Blot wasn’t able to attend the game, I did try to sneak my way into as many All-Star Weekend events as my pregnant wife would allow. The NBA has always been my favorite professional sports league, and I love all the hoopla surrounding its signature event. It’s really amazing how much bigger the All-Star Weekend has become since it was last here in Houston 7 years ago. Now there are amazing signings, parties and sneaker events all over the city where you can rub shoulders with your favorite basketball players, musicians and artists.

Dwyane Wade x Li-Ning “Way of Wade” NBA 2013 All-Star Weekend Sting Wades Sneakers

Once such event was Li-Ning’s “Way of Wade” pop-up shop on Saturday where the Chinese sneaker company unveiled their new line of Dwyane Wade clothing and apparel, including some really killer limited edition All-Star colorways of Dwyane’s new sneakers “Sting Wades”.  Dwyane even came by for an appearance and to officially launch his new sneakers! While the $250 basketball shoes didn’t blow me away, I was super excited to check out the two amazing Jermaine Rogers screen prints commissioned by Wade and Li-Ning specially for the pop-up shop and Wade’s private “Way of Wade” party the night before.

Dwyane Wade x Li-Ning “Preparation/Domination” NBA 2013 All-Star Weekend Screen Print by Jermaine Rogers

The open edition black Dwyane Wade x Li-Ning "Preparation/Domination" by Jermaine was made specifically for Wade's private "Way of Wade" party Friday night, and one was given to every person in attendance. The figure of Wade “in action” in his silhouette is actually printed in glow in the dark ink and really stands out on this striking image. I love Jermaine's use of color in this piece! The Blot’s not exactly sure of the print's dimensions, but it looked like a 12”x24” print and retailed for $30.

Dwyane Wade x Li-Ning “Way of Wade” NBA 2013 All-Star Weekend Mixed Media on Wood Panel by Jermaine Rogers

The second print is entitled “Make Your Own Way” and all prints were printed on foil, a signature of Jermaine’s many releases, exclusively for Li-Ning's All-Star Weekend pop-up shop. This print is slightly larger than the "Preparation/Domination" print (maybe 18”x24”), but this release was limited to just 100 pieces and came signed and numbered by Jermaine! What really blew me away is that Dwyane specifically requested this pretty large s/n foil print be priced reasonably for his fans, so it retailed for just $30!!! Who needs sneakers when you can get this amazing piece of art by a true rock poster legend for just $30!?! Jermaine also did an incredible recreation of his foil print as a 60”x40” mixed media piece on wood panel, which hung prominently at the Li-Ning pop-up shop.

Dwyane Wade x Li-Ning “Way of Wade” NBA 2013 All-Star Weekend 2013 Screen Print by Jermaine Rogers

The Blot of course snagged the signed and numbered Dwyane Wade x Li-Ning “Make Your Own Way” foil print by Jermaine Rogers, and when I left the gallery on Saturday there were a small amount of both prints still available. No clue if either sold out at the event after I left, but if you want to pick either of these basketball prints by Jermaine, I suggest heading over to his website and signing up for his mailing list.  That's the best way to stay on top of all of his future releases.

The Walking Dead Television Series 3 Action Figures by McFarlane Toys - Michonne, Michonne’s Zombie Pet 1 & Michonne’s Zombie Pet 2

The Blot’s been waiting what feels like a year to finally blog about McFarlane Toys’ new The Walking Dead Television Series 3 action figures. While there have been photos of this wave for months, I didn’t really want to talk about it until we saw the final product. Well those images finally arrived thanks to Toy Fair 2013 and this set looks sick!!! The Walking Dead Television Series 3 includes Michonne, Merle Dixon, Autopsy Zombie, Michonne’s Zombie Pet 1 and Michonne’s Zombie Pet 2.

The Walking Dead Television Series 3 Action Figures by McFarlane Toys - Michonne, Merle Dixon, Autopsy Zombie, Michonne’s Zombie Pet 1 & Michonne’s Zombie Pet 2

This release is a HUGE improvement over Series 2, with each figure actually looking identical to their real life counterparts from the hit AMC television series. I especially love all the details included in Michonne’s Zombie Pets. I really appreciate that they worked hard to make each Pet look like a unique character, and those backpacks are so lifelike!

Marvel's Iron Man 3 Micro Mighty Muggs Blind Box Series Vinyl Figures by Hasbro

Even though The Blot’s known about this Iron Man 3 Micro Muggs Blind Box Series for a while, we finally got a look at the entire series thanks to Hasbro’s booth at Toy Fair 2013 last week. I’ve finally come to terms with the fact that Hasbro’s full size Mighty Muggs line is probably gone for good, but I still can’t get into these 1.75” Micro Muggs. I get why Hasbro would want to shrink their popular platform figure to compete in the rising collectible micro figure market, but it’s just not the same! Then again I think these micro figures are probably looking to bring in younger collectors.

You can also purchase an order of 6 blind boxes from Entertainment Earth for $18.49 here.
