Johnny Cupcakes Pop Culture T-Shirts

Last weekend Johnny Cupcakes released a new batch of t-shirts that had The Blot written all over them! All three designs were influenced heavily by pop culture, two are based on classic movies and one pays tribute to the greatest punk rock band of all time. Can you guess what they are!?!

I keep going back and forth on which of these designs I like the most, but I starting to think it’s The Wizard of Oz inspired “Bakers of Oz” tee. I just love the simple portrait of a winged monkey and its striking use of color. The Karate Kid inspired “Crane Kick” is also pretty solid, with the JC crew replacing Daniel-san with a portly baker. And then there’s “Lets Bake,” which is based on The Ramones’ log (which in turn is based on the seal of the President of the United States). I have to imagine this is definitely going to be the most popular of the three designs.

Copter Boy Custom Munny by Huck Gee

Huck Gee just unveiled Copter Boy, his newest custom Munny, and it is seriously freaking awesome! It also looks like the start of a brand new world more fascinating than the last. What kind of wonderful characters will we meet and adventures will we go on during our trip through Huck’s Three Wars? Only time will tell!

Long before there was the now legendary Hotaru Copter Squad there was simply "Copter Boy" who, with his sister's help, introduced a revolutionary and last minute innovation that turned out to be pivotal in the battle for Mount Shirokuri. The siblings, strapped into their magical, flying contraptions, rained fire down on the enemy, spreading fear and breaking ranks wherever they flew. The tale of Whiskers the Wizard's bumbling stablehands and their preposterous flying experiments turning the tide of that battle is an unbelievable yet jovial chapter in the history of The Three Wars.

Thor The Avengers Screen Print by Martin Ansin

The sixth print in Mondo’s The Avengers Screen Print Series features goes on sale today and features Marvel's Norse god, Thor! This print by Martin Ansin is definitely The Blot’s favorite of the series. He does an amazing job capturing the fury of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, and the crazy looking lightning bolts give the poster a very unique, retro vibe. This is definitely a print I could see hanging in my house one day.

Iron Man The Avengers Screen Print by Kevin Tong

The fifth print in Mondo’s The Avengers Screen Print Series features goes on sale today and features the film’s star, Iron Man. The Blot’s never been a huge Iron Man fan, but this print by Kevin Tong is freaking amazing! I pretty much love everything about it. Mondo has done a killer job matching up each Marvel super hero with an artist whose style matches their look.

Lovebirds Vinyl Figures by Kronk

I know a lot of diehard Kronk fans who have been eagerly awaiting today’s release from Kidrobot. It is my understanding that the South African artist gave away the ultra limited edition white colorway of these Lovebirds as party favors at his wedding, and now Kidrobot is making the cute little figures available to the rest of us!

Support the Tenacious Toys x Scott Tolleson Noir Uncle Argh Qee Kickstarter Project – Only 5 Days Left!

You probably remember The Blot’s post last month on the exciting new Kickstarter project from Tenacious Toys and Scott Tolleson. The two had teamed up to produce a limited edition second colorway of Scott’s Uncle Argh Mini Qee. Well there’s less than 5 days left and the Kickstarter project is 96% funded. But it still needs your help to reach the finish line! Tenacious Toys is less than $250 away from starting production on its exclusive monochromatic Noir Edition colorway but it still needs a few more backers to bring this cute little figure to the toy craving masses. The Incredible Hulk The Avengers Screen Print by Ken Taylor

The fourth print in Mondo’s The Avengers Screen Print Series features goes on sale today and features the green behemoth, the Incredible Hulk! This is a beautiful poster by Ken Taylor, and I love his version of the Hulk. I just wish Mark Ruffalo wasn’t the focal point of the screen print. Ruffalo is the only member of the Avengers not to appear in any of Marvel’s official tie-in films, and because of that no one really knows what to expect from his version of the character. It’s hard for me to get into a print of Bruce Banner when I don’t even know if I’ll like this third take on the character in the past ten years. Hopefully Whedon knows what he’s doing! Then again, I doubt Banner gets all that much screen time with so many great heroes in this film.

Captain America The Avengers Screen Print by Phantom City Creative

The third print in Mondo’s The Avengers Screen Print Series features goes on sale today and features the first avenger, Captain America. While I love Cap, The Blot’s really not feeling this screen print by Phantom City Creative. I think it’s the composition. While the shield looks awesome, the way the poster cuts off the top of Captain America’s head is really distracting. I almost wish they had just focused primarily on the shield itself and ditched Steve Rogers all together.

G.I. Joe: Retaliation Character Movie Poster - D.J. Cotrona as Flint

Last Friday when the internet was bombarded by G.I. Joe: Retaliation character movie posters The Blot questioned where was the Flint one sheet!?! D.J. Cotrona (who will be portraying G.I. Joe’s popular warrant officer Flint in the live action film) has been featured prominently in the movie’s trailers so far, but was a no show last week when G.I. Joe 2’s character movie poster set was finally unveiled. Thankfully this was just an oversight and now we’ve got this pretty bland poster of D.J. as Flint. I guess beggars can’t be choosers! Regardless, I’m really looking forward to finding out whether Cotrona’s Flint will be romantically linked to Adrianne Palicki’s Lady Jaye in the film, since these two characters are almost always linked in the various incarnations of G.I. Joe comics and cartoons.

The Blot’s been following the creation of these Sinister Mister resin figures by Vanessa Ramirez for some time now, and I’m excited to announce they will be going on sale tomorrow, Thursday, April 26th! Vanessa has been working hard on the creation of her first original sculpt and these dastardly yet dapper villains look fantastic! Ten Sinister Mister resin wall sculptures were created in all, each sporting a sweet ‘stache (a Ramirez trademark) and one of ten color schemes. The Nightmare Before Christmas Screen Print by Graham Erwin

Mondo and Sideshow Collectibles continue their popular line of Disney screen prints with this fun The Nightmare Before Christmas screen print by Graham Erwin featuring the Mayor of Halloween Town. Honestly, I’m a little surprised by the timing of this print’s release. While I love NBX, you’d think a print like this would be better released say around the end of October or December. Regardless, Erwin killed this print! I just hope this means we can look forward to more Nightmare Before Xmas character banners in the coming months.

Image Comics 20th Anniversary Variant Covers by Ghris Giarrusso

On April Fool’s Day at Emerald City Comiccon, Robert Kirkman and Chris Giarrusso tried to pull a fast on the ECCC fans in attendance for the Skybound/The Walking Dead panel. They announced a new project entitled The Walking Dead for Kids, which would be a panel-by-panel recreation of early Walking Dead issues drawn in Giarrusso’s trademark, kid friendly art style. While the new comic series was a hoax, the image would actually be used as part of a new series of variant covers in honor of Image Comics’ 20th Anniversary.

Since then Image has announced that in honor of its 20th anniversary, Giarrusso will recreate twelve classic first issue covers as variants. First to get the “too-cute” treatment is Youngblood #17, which is especially appropriate because Youngblood was the very first Image title. Thanks to iFanboy, we now have pics of the Giarrusso’s first six Image 20th Anniversary variant covers: The Walking Dead, Spawn, The Savage Dragon, Youngblood, Shadowhawk and Morning Glories. My only question is which book will feature the Shadowhawk cover?

To be honest, The Blot’s a huge fan of Giarrusso’s work. I’ve been reading his Mini Marvels and G-Man Comic Bits strips for years, and my copy of G-Man: Learning to Fly (featuring a sketch by Giarrusso) is my favorite comic purchase from my one and only trip to San Diego Comic-Con back in 2009. Honestly, we need more quality all ages material like Giarrusso’s published by the comic book industry!

The first six Image Comics 20th Anniversary variant covers by Chris Giarrusso will be released sporadically over the next four months (May, June, July and August 2012) and The Blot wants them all! Be sure to keep your eyes peeled to The Blot Says… for more details on these awesome variant covers, and hopefully pictures of the second batch of tribute covers.

Black Resin Mini Mad'l by MAD

While The Blot was traveling to Colorado, MAD dropped the second colorway of his new line of handmade 3” resin Mini Mad’ls! These figures look incredible, and collectors are definitely going crazy for them. In fact, this Black Mini Mad’l resin figure reportedly sold out in 2.3 seconds flat! I know I can’t wait to get my hands on one. 

20 Black Mini Mad’l resin figures were created for this release sold exclusively at MAD’s online store for $50 each. Each figure comes packaged in a custom gift box, which includes a signed and numbered certificate of authenticity. If you’re like The Blot and haven’t been able to snag either the clear or black Mini Resin Mad’ls, fear not! Rumor has it a third colorway will be released soon!

“Muppet Theatre” Screen Print by James V. Carroll

As you all know The Blot’s a Muppet fanatic, so of course I’m all over this newest release from Dark Ink Art (formerly Acme Specialty Art). The “Muppet Theatre” screen print by James V. Carroll celebrates the 35th anniversary of the gone but never forgotten original Muppet Show. What really makes this print special is Carroll’s connection to the Muppet franchise. The San Francisco artist is not only a known contributor to the Muppet fan community, but he actually worked with Palisades Toys for many of their classic action figure designs.

“Muppet Theatre” by James V. Carroll is an 18”x24” hand signed and numbered screen print. This fun Muppet print will be released in three colorways: the crème Standard Edition (limited to 200 pieces), the red Red Carpet Variant (limited to 50 pieces), and the blue Neon Night Variant (limited to 50 pieces). Threadless Mr. T T-Shirt “Gentleman T”

Growing up as a young child in the 80s, I still hold much of the pop culture from that decade close to my heart. And one of my all time personalities from the “Me Decade” is Mr. T! From The A-Team and Rocky III to his Mr. T cartoon series and lunch boxes, The Blot couldn’t get enough of the gold chained, Mohawk sporting actor. I pity the fool who didn’t love Mr. T back then..heck I pity the fool who doesn’t love Mr. T right now! Because of all that 80s nostalgia, how can you not love this Mr. T inspired t-shirt from Threadless featuring Mr. T drinking a spot of tea!?! I can't lie, I got pretty excited as soon as I saw the “Gentleman T” design!

EE Exclusive Sheldon Batman Variant The Big Bang Theory Bobble Head

Last week Funko released a third colorway of its popular Sheldon Big Bang Theory bobble head, and it’s possibly the best one yet! Just check out the new Entertainment Earth Exclusive Batman T-Shirt Variant Sheldon for yourself. The original Sheldon figure sported a Flash t-shirt (seen here) and the second colorway featured Sheldon wearing a Green Lantern tee (seen here). One of my favorite aspects of The Big Bang Theory is all of the DC Comics paraphernalia that shows up in each episode. And more often than, Sheldon can be seen wearing some sort of DC super hero logo t-shirt. It’s become a trademark of his, and now you can buy a Sheldon bobble head featuring each character’s logo!

“Waves” Custom Qee by Matt JOnes

Over the weekend The Blot got introduced to Matt JOnes’ newest custom 8” Qee for the Heavy Metal Qee Project taking place now at Forbidden Planet in London and it blew me away. Entitled “Waves,” this Custom Knuckles Qee features waves both made of water and the ones you make using your hand. “Waves” is controlled by “Quite New,” who while rising up from the murky depths is seen waiving his hand in a welcoming gesture (while sporting a Lunartik t-shirt naturally). 

This fun custom can be purchased at the Lunartik online store for £1400, part of its proceeds going to the Garden House Hospice.

Metallic Ice Scream Man Flavors by Brutherford Industries & BMP Co.

The Blot was so bummed when I learned this awesome collaboration between Brutherford Industries and Brown Magic Paint Company was already sold out before I even found out about them! That’s what I get for falling way behind on my email. But these metallic colorways of Brutherford Industries’ signature figure, the Ice Scream Man, were just too cool not to blog about. BMP Co. did a fantastic job giving these figures their trademark sparkly magic metallic treatment.

Two extremely limited flavors were hand painted by the Brown Magic Paint Co., “Heavy Metal Mint” and “Stainless Steel Strawberry.” Only five of each flavored Ice Scream Man were created, and these bad boy sold out almost instantly upon release. Each figure retailed for $115, came signed and numbered by Brutherford and Brown Magic Paint Company, and was packaged in a pinstriped box customized with hand painted details by BMP Co. Be sure to keep your eyes peeled to Brutherford Industries’ online store for even more exciting Ice Scream Man releases!

G.I. Joe: Retaliation Character Movie Posters

Yesterday the internet was bombarded with exclusive looks at G.I. Joe: Retaliation’s first set of character one sheet movie posters. The Blot’s been wondering for a few weeks now why no posters for the film had been released and then BAM! nine different character posters show up. I guess if you’re finally going to release a set of posters for a big summer blockbuster you’ve gotta go big, and the marketing team behind G.I. Joe: Retaliation definitely went big with this set.

Character movie poster sets are often pretty boring, but the team behind G.I. Joe 2 did a great job picking out photos for these one sheets. I have to give them credit, other than a few boring duds (Duke and Joe Colton), these are actually pretty cool looking. I’m especially loving Roadblock, Jinx, Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow’s poses in these posters with Roadblock and Jinx’s being the most intriguing. Plus, we get our very first full look at the new Cobra Commander. Boy is this a huge improvement over the character’s look in the first film!

I’m also glad to see Channing Tatum’s Duke got a poster because based on the film’s trailers there has been heavy speculation that his character is killed off in the film’s opening scene. I’m hoping that’s not the case, but clearly he has not been featured in much of G.I. Joe 2’s marketing to date and after a huge 2011/2012 it’s arguable that Tatum is the film’s 2nd biggest star after Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (sorry Bruce Willis). My only question now is, where is Zartan’s poster!?!

Sweet Demon Custom 8” Dunny by OsiRisORion

This weekend OsiRisORion is unleashing his newest creation at Tenacious Toys’ Candy Coated Custom Show on Saturday, April 21st, at The London Candy Company in New York City. The Blot’s always been a big fan of OsiRisORion’s custom figures, especially his Demon and Space Junk characters, so of course I’m really digging this brand new 8 inch custom Dunny entitled “Sweet Demon.”

This bad boy includes all of the classic elements that make an OsiRisORion custom great! Just check out those eyes, teeth and amazing paint job! I also love the peppermint the Sweet Demon is sporting in its chest to go along with the candy theme of the show. I’m just bummed I won’t be able to see this crazy looking custom in person, but hopefully those of you living in the NYC area will be able to hit up the show on Saturday!

“Assemble” The Avengers Movie T-Shirt by Lain Lee 3 Design

Although Lain Lee 3’s “Clothe Yourself in Awesome” Kickstarter project didn’t get funded, the San Francisco designer didn’t let that stop him from following his dream of launching his own line of pop culture inspired t-shirts. Lain3 kept grinding and earlier this week he released his “Assemble” design in honor of this summer’s The Avengers. I love his unique take on the movie version of Marvel’s Avengers and how he incorporated his "III" logo on both the front and back of this tee. There’s definitely no better shirt to wear to opening night of The Avengers than “Assemble” by Lain3!

Support The Variants Season 3 Kickstarter Project!

The Variants, a web series about life in a comic book shop, is a must watch for comic book fans everywhere. The Blot’s been a huge fan of the series from the beginning, and when I heard the show’s executive producers were starting a Kickstarter project to help a third season I knew I needed to get involved! After two seasons of being an all-volunteer production, the cast and crew of The Variants need your help to move forward with filming of a third season.

The goal for this Kickstarter project is to raise $8,000 to make season three a reality. As Richard Neal, the owner of Zeus Comics, explained on Twitter, by raising these funds they can film all of Season 3 at one time, which will allow them to release the series weekly and add Chris Haley and Curt Franklin of the webcomic Let's Be Friends Again to the cast. Haley and Franklin guest starred in the season finale of Season 2 as potential investors in taking Zeus (the comic book store where The Variants takes place) national.

The Variants Season 3 Kickstarter project is already halfway funded with almost 40 days still to go! By raising the $8,000 through Kickstarter, The Variants can produce six all new episodes. If they are able to raise $10,000, they will produce 8 episodes, and if they make it all the way to $12,000, they’ll produce 10 episodes and additional content for the series. The Blot is a huge proponent of supporting web series and webcomics whose creators give out free content on a daily, weekly or monthly basis, which is why I have already pledged to this exciting project. Hopefully after watching The Variants and finding out more about the great incentives involved with this Kickstarter project, you’ll want to support this fantastic show as well.
