It’s weird, but as popular as Mimobots are The Blot’s never actually seen one out of its packaging. Thankfully I was able to get my hands on two Green Lantern DC Comics Mimobots recently and give them a proper review. While originally released in conjunction with last summer’s live action Green Lantern movie, the look of these figures is actually based on the comic book version of the characters (hence the yellow ring wielding Sinestro). This is obviously a very good thing since the movie was such a dud!
The two Green Lantern Mimobots I received were 2GB Hal Jordan and Sinestro figures and they’re all kinds of awesome! I’ve always thought Mimobots were a cool idea, but seeing them in their packaging always gave me the impression they were too big for everyday use as a portable USB thumb drive. The truth is they’re not as tall or heavy as I originally thought, which are both huge positives in my book. Because of that, if I had one recommendation to Mimoco it would be to change the packaging.
I’ve owned a number of USB flash drives over the past few years and I’ve found that I’m actually pretty picky. One of my biggest concerns with thumb drives is whether or not they can fit into the USB slots in all of the various computers I use regularly. I’ve had a number of designer USB flash drives that can’t fit into certain desktop computer USB slots because of their design, and there is nothing more infuriating! That’s definitely not a concern with Mimoco’s Mimobots and their extended heads. Once you pop off the foreheads of Hal and Sinestro, they’re ready to go (and feat easily in all three of my personal and work computers).
As a huge DC Comics fan the big draw of these Green Lantern Mimobots are the characters themselves, but they are also come preloaded with Green Lantern themed wallpapers, icons, screensavers, avatars and more! I don’t see myself using these extras, but they’re a nice added touch for those who want to customize their computers with some cool Green Lantern content. The quality control on these figures’ paint jobs is pretty good but by no means perfect. As soon as I opened them up I noticed some blemishes in their designs, however they actually take a pretty good beating floating around in my backpack. That really says something since these are designed to be functional toys.
All in all, I’ve been using my Hal Jordan Mimobot for a couple of weeks now and I really love it. Of all the “designer” USB flash drives I’ve used over the years, these Green Lantern thumb drives are definitely my favorite. Plus, where else can you get your files protected by a Green Lantern’s light? The only thing missing is a little hole in their feet where you can add a lanyard or keychain for extra portability. I’ll also probably choose a higher memory capacity next time around. While 2GB is usually sufficient, it’s hard to resist the pull of a more memory (you can choose from 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB and 64GB). If you’re a fan of DC Comics or any of Mimoco’s other properties including Star Wars, Hello Kitty and Star Wars, then I highly recommend picking up one of these cool USB flash drives.
