Every War Has A Beginning
I still remember watching the very first Underworld film. I was expecting some B-movie schlock and instead we got real movie magic. For a brief moment it turned Kate Beckinsale into a bona fide action star and made Scott Speedman tolerable. I’ve seen it multiple times and was even excited for the sequel, Underworld: Evolution, until I actually saw the movie in theaters and was thoroughly disappointed. Now that the third Underworld movie, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, is set to hit theaters I don’t know what to expect.
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is not a traditional sequel in that it’s actually a prequel to the original film. What does that mean for quality? The Blot has no clue. One positive note is that Underworld 3 won’t be bogged down by the stink of Underworld: Evolution. But since it’s a prequel, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans won’t have the star power of Beckinsale or Speedman to carry the film.
As with many recently released prequels movie studios often green light prequels as a way to continue a franchise without having to pay its big named stars for a return engagement. These movies typically suck and end up being released direct to DVD. So I guess it can be construed as a good sign that Underworld: Rise of the Lycans was deemed good enough to still be released in theaters. Whether or not it will meet fans’ expectations is still yet to be seen.
